5 Tips For Toddler With The Flu

It is about that time of the year. You leave the house with your children for one day and bam… the next day they end up sick. My girls hardly get sick but that is because we are homebody’s who honestly never really have any interactions with anyone else. However, during this holiday season they have been everywhere so of course in the end caught the flu. So here are 5 ways we got through the crazy week of them both having the flu, and me not catching it.
1. Let Them Sleep.
Having the flu can be exhausted for the babies little bodies. The body is working hard trying to fight of the virus and they can become extremely fussy and extremely irritable. It doesn’t matter if they take one 3 hour nap or 3 one hour naps let them sleep. Sleeping helps the body restore energy and can help them fight off any virus that is attacking them. While they have the flu sleep is important and no matter how much you think is too much it isn’t. They need all the rest they can get
2. Check Their Fevers and Keep It Down.
So at the start of the flu we were taking the girls temperature with a thermometer but my dad actually bought these cute little sticker fever monitors called Fever Bugs that work amazing. While they have the flu they may strike high fevers which is just the body trying to fight off the virus. Now with children we CANNOT let it get too high for too long so always try to keep it down. We have used wet rags on their head and bodies, of course a mix of Tylenol and Motrin when it spikes, and if it got really bad a bath just enough to cool them down but not cause their body to go into shock.
3. Keep Them Hydrated.
One of the hardest things I have had with little children and the flu is keeping them hydrated. Seriously, every other day they aren’t sick they are thirsty 24/7 but when they are sick they do not want anything to eat or drink. Keeping them hydrated is very important with the high fever so what we did was buy some Pedialyte, Pedialyte popsicles , juice, and water bottles. We seriously kept 3 different drink for them on the table and offered the popsicles anytime. Our number one helper was the popsicles because what kid can’t resist popsicles?
4. Let Them Be Little.
Toddlers. They are like little grown people in tiny bodies so of course once the virus hits is like we have little babies all over again. All I can say is let them be little. Enjoy all the cuddles and loving you are getting because they need their momma or daddy. Their little toddler bodies are just hurting, the fever makes them feel sick, and they may be exhausted, but having you their holding them and caring for them can be all they need just to get through the day. They need their parents to comfort sk and honestly that is the best medicine you can give.
5. Disinfect Everything.
Okay so I personally had two sick toddlers and a sick man with the flu. It’s a miracle that I didn’t get it but all I can say is disinfect everything at all times. We used hand sanitizer before every meal, hand sanitizer after every diaper change and every time Scarlett went to the potty. The girls got a bath every day to (what I like to say) wash away the sickness. I had also sprayed Lysol everywhere they laid, anywhere their hands touched, and all knobs, chairs, and covers. Washed blankets religiously and made sure to do what I could to keep my hands clean. It works, when you are pregnant and surrounded by 3 sick people you seriously have to take all measures.

I know not everyone will do what I do and have some better ideas and suggestions so if you do leave them down below so I can learn. This was the first year my girls got extremely sick so this momma was trying to do everything she could to make sure they were okay and happy. Just know that no matter what you do, you are an amazing parent.

  1. You’re you’re so right about everything, cleaning, rest, hydration and a lot of patience. I’m a more holistic mama so when flu season comes around we take Elderberry syrup and vitamin C daily to boost our immune systems so far not even a runny nose has hit our house. ❤️ I hope your girls recovered well!
